Banner — University Medicine Tucson is seeking a dynamic and team-focused Physician Assistant or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner to join our elite Surgical Oncology Team. As the only National Cancer Institute (NCI) – Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center headquartered in the state of Arizona, we deliver exceptional patient care with compassion and expertise across the spectrum of their cancer care.
Banner University Medicine Tucson (B-UMCT) seeks a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner for our Surgical Oncology Division. Specifically, this PA/NP will collaborate with a team of 5 surgical oncologists and 1 APP who focus on complex procedures involving the liver, pancreas, biliary system, and gastrointestinal tract to treat both benign and malignant conditions including cancers, cysts, and inflammatory disorders.

Position Focus: This role is an inpatient role. The PA/NP will support these complex oncology patients throughout their inpatient surgical journey, working with a team of surgical residents, consultants, case managers, physical therapists, and dieticians to ensure the best outcomes. There is an emphasis on ensuring readiness for discharge and appropriate oncologic follow-up as patients are discharged from the hospital and embark on the next phase of their care.
Key Responsibilities:
Round on the inpatient service daily
Patient Evaluation: Comprehensive assessment of postoperative patients and new surgical oncology consults
Clinical Management: Ordering tests, consulting specialists, and arranging admissions
Procedural Skills: Perform therapeutic and diagnostic procedures such as drain removal, opening of wounds, basic wound care
Continuity of Care: Serving as a consistent presence in the team
Team Communication: Coordinating care through various channels
Documentation: Maintaining thorough patient records
Discharge Planning: Working with case managers for smooth transitions of care with a goal of facilitating smooth transitions between hospital and outpatient settings
First Assist: Surgical assistance when needed
Interpret diagnostic tests and prescribe medications
Collaborate with surgeons, residents, nurses, and other team members
Participate in patient education, consultation, and research
Ideal Candidate: Comfortable with clinical management in the inpatient setting and works well in a collaborative multidisciplinary team. Motivated and willing to learn. New graduates with an interest in complex surgical care are encouraged to apply!
Minimum Requirements:
Current Board Certification, DEA license, and BLS certification
Graduate degree from an accredited NP/PA program
Oncology experience preferred but not required
Work Schedule: 5-Day, 8-hour shifts or 4-day, 10-hour shifts per preference
